Weymouth Sink Miners for Crucial Win

Weymouth Beach  travelled to Doncaster on Saturday to take on The Miners and clinched a crucial 3-0 victory in their quest to stay in National League Division 1.

The away side made the long journey north hoping to build on their successful victory over Cambridge the previous weekend and climb the NVL Division 1 table. The first set went just the way they were hoping, pulling out an early lead and staying comfortably ahead throughout the set with solid hitting from outside hitters Liam Tewkesbury and Valdis Baranovs. By the end of the set they had amounted a comfortable 25-17 lead.

The second set did not start in such a comfortable manner with the introduction of The Miners main attacking threat. Weymouth found themselves 5-0 down quickly with work to be done to save anything from the set. Quality serving from Ryan Stout and solid blocking from Ollie Smith and Darren Harding saw the away team start to mount a come back part-way through the set though as Doncaster’s dangerous attacking option could not cause the required damage from the back court. Weymouth came back just in time to clinch the 2nd set 25-23.

The third set went the way of the travelling side once again with a solid first pass throughout from Libro Elliott Sawyer and, as the referee said afterwards, ‘the best attack he has seen this season’ from Sam Groom sealed a 25-10 victory and another 3 points for Weymouth.

Weymouth’s next game sees them play on Saturday 12th February vs Bristol VC at, the currently at risk, Redlands Community Sports Centre (1:15). Come and show your support for the side and sports centre and show people why we cannot lose this sports facility from our town.
