Exeter Cup match – Full match report

Weymouth Beach Volleyball Club’s Indoor Team take a confidence boosting 3-0 victory over Exeter Storm away from home in the National Cup first Round. 25-21, 30-28, 25-21.

This weekend greeted the Volleyball Club’s Indoor set up with their first game of the new season.

The side travelled to Exeter to compete in the first round of the National Cup. The game got off to a nervous start as the first serve ended up in the net from Ryan Stout. Fortunately, the team were able to win the following point which brought, fellow coach, Sean Hendry back to serve. After a run of unstoppable jump serves, Weymouth built up a comfortable lead. Both teams traded points for the majority of the set with Weymouth playing steady Volleyball. Tom Allen showed his worth on his debut with some consistent outside hitting. Exeter couldn’t pull back the early lead and Weymouth took the set 25-21.

The second set got off to a shakey start as the Weymouth passing unit struggling to come to terms with what should have been a relatively straight forward serve and were quickly down 1-8. The team regrouped at the time-out and throughout the set slowly pulled the lead back. A highlight of which saw spectacular pick ups from Terry Oldrid, followed by another from Stout to keep the team in a point. The side were able to make better use of their hitting options in this set, with the experienced Stuart Jeanes finding gaps in the Exeter defence through the middle. Weymouth timed their comeback perfectly levelling the set at 25 all before finally pulling away to win 30-28.

Weymouth took the third and decisive set 25-21 relatively comfortably with some good middle blocking from Mike Powell, while Stout started to link up more effectively with both Hendry and Oldrid. This allowed substitutions to be made bringing in outside hitter Liam Tewkesbury and debutant middle Darren Harding, both making notable contributions.

Weymouth progress into the second round where they will take on Cardiff Celts, a side 2 divisions higher than themselves, where they hope to cause an upset and reverse last years cup result.
