Great Britain Teams Take Titles

The 28th Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic sponsored by RAF Careers was another massive success from its start with the local Corporate competition on Thursday evening through to the Womens and Mens Finals on Sunday afternoon.

The womens Final was won by Zara Dampney and Shauna Mullin, currently ranked 24th in the World and number 1 ranked British team who defeated the Volleyball England Beach tour leaders, Gabi Madreka and Eva Czinegeova 21-15, 21-14. The final was watched by a packed and excited crowd of 1000 people around the main Centre Court who were also entertained by The Pzazz dancers. As soon as the final had been completed Zara and Shauna had to make a dash up the motorway to get a flight to Poland so that they could compete in the World Tour event in Poland this week.

The Mens final saw Robin Meidzibrowski and Tom Lord the number 1 seeds and members of the Great Britain squad  play Russell Watson and Phil Smith. This match saw high quality power hitting from both sides  but it was Robin and Tom who came through to win 21-17, 21-15 to take the Weymouth title for the first time. Earlier in the afternoon Russell and Phil had defeated Steve Fee and Albrecht Glitz in the semi final. This defeat meant that Steve and Albrecht just failed to make their 5th consecutive final at Weymouth.

Earlier in the weekend local side Terry Oldrid and under 18 national Champion Ryan Stout competed superbly with this international competition and fought their way through the early rounds before eventually going to finish in a very creditable 13th place. Ryan though was back on centre Court again on Sunday afternoon for the final on the Under 18 competition playing with Aiden Lewis from Wales and they had a convincing win 15-12, 15-10 to retain their title.

In all over 100 teams took part in the event over the weekend and just on Centre Court alone players from 14 different countries were seen over the weekend. Overall the  event directors Graeme Sawyer, Pete Bennett and Lyle Harmon were delighted the event had gone so successfully and were particularly pleased that so many of the players commented about how much they had enjoyed their stay in the town and would be back in 2011 for the 29th event.

Players of the Tournament were Zara Dampney and Rob Flay .

Brien Donnellon was inducted into the Hall Of Fame for his 28th consecutive appearance at Weymouth

Abi Davies and Louise Bugler won the Spirit Of The Tournament Award for thier work with the Weymouth organisation team over the weekend and the season.

Wednesday 28th July

The Weymouth Classic site is now under construction seating and marquees are in place and the main courts will go up this evening. This afternoon the site is being used for a Junior Beach football event and tomorrow evening see the Battens Corporate Beach Volleyball evening with over 25 local businesses putting in teams.

Last night's Weymouth Beach League saw a guuet appearance from ex local Jack Turner, now living in Claifornia playing with Delvine Daiz also from Claifornia. Both will be competing at the Classic this weekend. Without Ryan Stout and Terry Oldrid present ( Ryan on Junior GB indoor training) all the teams felt that they were in with a good chance of taking the title. However Jack and Delvine's Californian experience guided them through beating Jules Stout and Arron Sandrey in the final 15-12.

The B Series saw a first and well deserved win for Laura Stone and Mat Board. This pair have always been there or there abouts but never before have they managed to take the title. This win still keeps them in with a chance of winning the B Series title with just one week to go.( see rankings page)

WEYMOUTH'S NATIONAL CHAMPION

Ryan Stout regained his British Under 16 National Beach Volleyball title last weekend and at the same time added the Under 18 title!

Ryan, a student at Budmouth College was playing with Mat Hunter from Poole at Sandbanks in the National championships and completely dominated the event. In both the Under 16 and Under 18 Championships they didn’t drop a set. In the Under 16 they comfortably came through the early rounds and won the final 21-13, 21-15

In the Under 18’s Ryan played with his more frequent partner Aiden lewis from Wales. Life was a bit tougher with some hard games against members of the Indoor volleyball Great Britain Under 18 side but even so they still were in complete command winning the final 21-7, 21-19

Meanwhile in the Weymouth League Ryan had a disappointing in evening in difficult wet conditions and playing with Mike Powell they went out in the semi finals to Rob Semmence and Dom Cosserat 21-12. Rob and Dom then played Jules Stout and  Alessio Boniolo in the final and came out winners 21-15 for their first event win for 5 weeks and bringing them back up to 2nd place in the rankings.

Wednesday 14th July  CLASSIC FORMAT CHANGE

The Classic organisers last night decided to make a slight change to the format for the mens event for 2010. There will now be 24 teams in the main draw in the mens event. This increases the chances of teams pre qualifying and also a higher chance of getting through the qualifying competition.

Dont forget normal entry price finishes on Monday 19th July ( less than a week away!!)

Competing  in the Friday qualifier means you are certain to have an absolute minimum of 5 matches over two days  and probably a lot more  and most matches are likely to be at your level.

Nobody gets eliminated on the Friday, if you dont make the main draw there will be a high standard  B event to compete in.

 Friday 9th July

Below: Australians Ben Carter and Ryan Nicholls in action in the New South Wales open earlier this year. These two will be seen on Weymouth beach in 3 weeks time.

WEEK 7 WEYMOUTH BEACH LEAGUE REPORT

Terry Oldrid and Ryan stout stayed on course to be the Champions of the Weymouth Beach Volleyball League this week with yet another win their 5th of the season however, they didn’t have it all their own way. Previous Champion Alessio Boniolo who is now living in London returned for this week’s competition and teamed up with Elliott Sawyer and were always going to be a threat.

Sawyer and Boniolo had to battle their way through to the final winning a great match against Arron Sandrey and Jules Stout. It was match that looked as though Boniolo and Sawyer would win easily when they led 18-10 but a combination of tentative play by Sawyer annd Boniolo and increasing confidence from Stout and Sandrey saw the lead slip away so that at 20-18 it was anyone’s match. Eventually a crucial missed serve allowed Boniolo and Sawyer to take the match 21-19 and gain a place in the final.

The final almost followed the same pattern with Ryan Stout and Terry Oldrid this time pulling out the lead before Boniolo and Sawyer hit back to bring the scores level at 19-19. At this point Oldrid and Stout just showed a little more belief and took the crucial points to win 21-19.  just one more win now should see them crowned champions.

The B Series saw  a tight 12 team competition with two new teams making the final. Mat Palmer and Mark Lee took on Rob leech and Paul Fitzgerald. It was a tight match all the way until 15-15 when Lee and Palmer pulled away to win 21-16.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 30TH 2010          CLASS ENTRIES FOR CLASSIC 2010

Top entries are beginning to come in for the 2010 Beach Classic to be held on Weymouth Beach from 30th July to 1st August. In the mens event one of the top Australian teams who are planning on competing in the Wolrd Tour will compete, Ryan Carter and Ben Nichols have been top Australian players for the last few years and now as well as playing World Tour events are coming to Europe to  competein events in France, Spain and Weymouth.

In the womens event the most noticeable entry so  far is the American pair Delavane Diaz and Bonnie Wilson who normally compete on the Californian tour at AAA level. Both teams should add quality to the event and will be great competition for the top British teams.

BEACH LEAGUE WEEK 6

Meanwhile on Tuesday there was another exciting evening in The Weymouth Beach League. Stout and Oldrid who had their first defeat of the season last week were determined to get back on the winning track this week but they didn’t have it all their own way.  With Dom Cosserat away Rob Semmance teamed up with veteran Graeme Sawyer  and these two quickly found an understanding and worked their way to the final against Ryan Stout and Terry Oldrid.

The match was always tight with the sides going point for point before some strong serving by 16 year old Ryan Stout carried the Stout /Oldrid combination to a narrow 15-12 win so that they could extend their lead at the top of the   A rankings.

The B series saw leaders saw Martin O’Neill and Dan Besant extend their lead at the top of the  B table with a win in  a tight final over Alex turner and Neil Aplin 17-15.

The C Series was won by Mat Caffer and Callum scott who were playing for the first time in the adult sections after being successful in the Under 16 competition

Monday 28th June

Week 5 of the Weymouth beach league gets underway tomorrow night and it promises to be an exciting evening with Oldrid and Stout losing their unbeaten record last week. The forecast is good again which does mean we expect a lot of players and we may have trouble getting the nets up if there are alot of people still on the beach.

Saturday Centre Court action from 2009

Wednesday 23rd June

The A series of the Weymouth Beach League came a live this week when the current unbeaten leaders Ryan Stout and Terry Oldrid lost their first matches of the season and Rob Semmence and Dom Cosserat came through to win their first event of the season.

In the early group matches 3 teams seemed to be in the hunt for this week’s title. With Arran Sandrey on holiday Jules Stout teamed up with Elliott Sawyer and they  looked a strong side, competing with both the other tops teams and defeating Semmence and  Cosserat in their pool match 15-12.

This set up a semi final for Sawyer and Stout against Oldrid and  Stout. It was a closely fought match with the defence of Stout and Sawyer looking particularly strong. However Stout and Oldrid eventually came through to claim a place in the final winning 15-12.

The other semi final saw Semmence and Cosserat play up and coming youngsters Ali Mitchell and Stephen Williamson winning 15-8.

This meant Semmence and Cosserat meeting the Oldrid, Stout combination which so far has been unbeatable on the beach this season. The match was the tightest final of the season. Semmence and Cosserat looked to have won it when they led 14-11 but Oldrid and Stout fought back to 14-14 however at this point Cosserat and Semmence pulled away again to win 17 –15.

The B series saw 15 teams competing in a very evenly matched tournament but eventually Weymouth Football Club Coach Andy Mason, playing with 16 year old  Charlie Holland battled through to the final to play Josh Ellis and  Mike Powell. This was another tight final before the Mason and Holland combination came through to win 16-14.

Thursday 17th June  This week's rankings and results are now on the local league pages.

This year's event looks like shaping up to be one of the best yet, to enter go to the link on the 2010 event page. Dont forget entry is cheaper during July!!!

Wednesday 16th June Full results, rankings, and Classic news tomorrow evening!

STOUT AND OLDRID MAINTAIN UNBEATEN RECORD

Terry Oldrid and Ryan Stout continued to extend their lead at the top of the Beach Volleyball League this weekend. When they completed their 4th successive tournament win of the season

The event was played in the worse conditions possible for Beach Volleyball, a strong wind, which makes control of the ball extremely difficult for all but the best players so maybe it was not surprising that Oldrid and Stout won again defeating Aaron Sandrey and Jules Stout in the final again 15-9.

The semi final battle between Stout and Sandrey and  Semmence and Cosserat  was again the closest match of the night with Stout and Sandrey winning 15-13 to make their second successive final.

In the B Series Aff Panjalizadeh and  Scott Dixon won their second event of the season with a 15-12 win over last week’s runners up  Jake Hetherington  and Ren Lawson .

In the C series Alex Mason and Jordan Fredirick avenged last week’s final defeat when they confortably beat  Richard Peach Dave Jewell 15 –4.

The Under 16 event was won for the second week in a row by Callum Scott & Matt Caffer who beat Charlie Holland & Dave Lown  21-15

Despite the difficult conditions 56 players took part and will be back again next Tuesday for the next evening in the Series.

Wednesday 9th June

A third successive win makes Ryan Stout  and Terry Oldrid clear runaway leaders  of the Weymouth Beach League this season. For the second successive week they defeated Arran Sandrey and  Jules Stout 15 –9 in the final.. The 9 team competition had seen some very close early round matches of which the closest was the semi final between Stout and Sandrey and Dom Cosserat and Rob Semmance which Stout and Sandrey eventually won 15-13.

The B series saw Weymouth College students Ali Mitchell and Stephen Williamson have their first win of the season . In the semi final they beat Budmouth College pair of  Jake Henderson and Ren Lawson in a tight match 16-14  but then much more comfortably defeated Carla Nollings and Mat Palmer 15 –7 in the final

The C series also had first time winners with Richard peach and David Jewell beating Alex Mason and Jordan Fredirick 15-6 in the final

The under 16 final saw Mat cafer and Callum scott get their first win of the season beating Charlie Holland and max ironside 15 –10 in the final..

The teams return next Tuesday evening for round 4 with Stout and Oldrid determined to keep their unbeaten run in tact. New teams can still join the competition and need to register on the beach by 6.15pm.

The first major beach Volleyball event of the season took place in Bournemouth this weekend with the British Universities Championships.  A really well run event on Boscombe beach right next to the surfing reef was a real success with 44 mens teams and 32 womens team taking part, suggesting a great future for Beach in Great Britain.  Weymouth player Elliott Sawyer competed for Chichester Uni with his partner Paul Wyles and the finished in a creditable 17th place

There are now 3 permanent courts in place on Boscombe beach, Weymouth hopes to have its first as soon as they hear from Volleyball England about the grant application. Something to look forward to on Weymouth beach!

FRIDAY 4TH JUNE 2010

After their successful introduction to the Classic last year it has been confirmed that Pazaz will be back for 2010. They will perform on Saturday afternoon and for all the finals on Sunday. it is also rumoured that they will be appearing at a few other VEBT events during the season.

Wednesday 2nd June 2010

Apologies for no recent updates this was caused by a problem with my access to the net, all now solved!!

Week 2 of the beach league saw the second successive win for Terry Oldrid and Ryan Stout who this time defeated Jules Stout and Arron Sandrey after last week beating Rob Semmence and Dom Cosserat. Oldrid and Stout look in awesome form and it is difficult to see any local side beating them this year. The most interesting competition could be the battle for second place between Sandrey and Stout and Cosserat and Semmence. (Full ranking positions can be seen on the local ranking page)

CLASSIC ENTRY FEES REDUCED

Entries for the Classic are now Open via the Volleyball England website. There is a link to this further down this page and on the Classic 2010 page.

Many teams last year rightly complained about the cost of the entry if they only wanted to enter one event on the VEBT. In 2009 as well as the entry fee they had to pay a registration of £15 per player to Volleyball England. The good news is that after campaigning by the Classic team this registration fee has been reduced to £5 per player, a reduction of £20 per team if you just plan on entering Weymouth 2010!!! So get you entries in fast and guarantee your place in Classic 2010.

Wednesday 19th May   Tuesday Evening League Begins

At the beginning of the evening the Club announced that it is sponsoring Ryan Stout (Under 16 National Beach Champion)  to help him be able to compete on the Junior Beach Tour this season.

FIVB World Tour - Brazil (Taken from British Volleyball website)

09:50 22nd April

In yesterday's 25th pace play-off Dampney / Mullin fell to their second defeat of the day.

Final positions:
Dampney / Mullin = 25th
Boulton / Johns = 41st
Miedzybrodzki / Weaver = 41st

21st April 2010
17:40

Miedzybrodzki / Weaver lost a very tight third set tie-break against their Australian opponents, leaving them in 41st place (21-13, 13-21, 14-16).

17:20

Dampney / Mullin were beaten 0-2 (13-21, 18-21) by the Georgians. Next up for them is the 25th place play-off at 18:30 UK time against Acevedo / Santiago from Puerto Rico. A victory there would send them through to the 17th place play-off, but defeat would leave them with a 25th place finish in this double-elimination tournament.

10:00

In the women's main draw Dampney / Mullin have been seeded 19th, and will face off against the 14th seeded Georgian pair of Saka / Rtvelo at 14:30 UK time.

Also in action are the men's pair of Miedzybrodzki / Weaver who start their season in the qualification tournament, needing to win two matches to make the main draw. If they can overcome Australians McHugh / Slack at 16:30 UK time, they will face Dugrip / Salvetti from France at 20:30 UK time.

20th April 2010
18:45

More bad news from Brasilia as Herbert / Brown went down 1-2 (21-19, 10-21, 9-15) to the Slovenians.

Tomorrow sees Dampney / Mullin start their season in the main draw, and Miedzybrodzki / Weaver play in the qualifcation rounds for the men's tournament.

Today it's the women's qualification tournament. With Dampney / Mullin entered directly into the main draw Boulton / Johns and Herbert / Brown will be vying to join them.
