SUNDAY 27TH JULY

BELOW IS A COPY OF THE REPORT SENT TO THE LOCAL PAPERS AFTER TODAYS GREAT DAY OF VOLLEYBALL ON WEYMOUTH BEACH. FULL RESULTS AND PICTURES TO FOLLOW IN THE COMING DAYS.

The  RAF Weymouth Beach Classic drew record crowds to the final on Sunday afternoon, who were able to watch the Mens and Womens finals under glorious sunny weather.

In the womens final the number 1 and 2 seeds battled it out for the title. The 4 players had swapped partners from last year so reigning champion Lucy Boulton teamed up with Zara Dampney while Lucy’s partner from last year Denise Johns played with Shauna Mullin.

The first set was a really tight action packed affair with Lucy Boulton probably playing the best shot of the weekend when she managed to over head kick a ball back over the net from the very back of the court! However Shauna and Denise managed to score the vital points to win the first set  21-19. Lucy and Zara got off the second set off to a slow start and trailed  6-2. They never really recovered from this and Denise Johns and Shauna Mullin took the set and the title 21-15.

In the Mens competition the final saw the runners up for the last two years Steve Fee and Albrecht Glitz take on last years winner Morph Bowes and his new partner Australian Olympic player Matt Grinlaubs. Matt and Morph totally domninated the first set and won 21-14. however the second set saw things change around as Fee and Glitz fought back and won 21 –16. this et up a nial biting final set which saw Grinlaubs and Bowes take and early only to see it pegged back. However in the end they were able to hang on and snatch a 15-13 win to take the mens title.

Overall the event was another huge success for the organisers. Sky Sports filmed the finals for two programmes to be on the 9/10th August and the RAF, the event main sponsors were delighted with their involvement.

On a local from Leanne Studley showed that if they keep up the training and gain more experience that they can compete with anyone on the tour. In fact a 15th place finish was disappointing from a team that a Great Britain coach felt had the potential to get into the top 8 in the country.

In the mens event local teams found the competition tough but Terry Oldrid and Elliott Sawyer and Ryan Jules Stout can be very encouraged with their joint 5th finish in the mens  2nd Division.

FRIDAY 25TH JULY

Oualifying day is complete and we now know the main draw for both events.

Most significant news for local Weymouth teams was that Leanne Studley and Louise Bugler cruised through winning both ther matches to claim a place in the main draw. On this form they will be a match for almost anyone!

Check in tomorrow opens at 8.15am and closes at 9am. Play starts 9.30am.

You also may have seen us on the One show on BBC 1 this evening, a brief but spectacular live appperance from Event Director Graeme Sawyer and Lucy Boulton with assorted players in the background!!

Pictures and full results will appear here next week.

WEDNESDAY 23RD JULY 2008

Firstly, some breaking news to be confirmed later today or tomorrow, is that there is a good chance of National Live TV from the beach on Friday. We will put details on the site as soon as it is confirmed.

Construction of the site continues this morning with the building of a new main marquee around Centre Court. It will replace the blue and white striped marquees which have been at Weymouth for years and hopefully will be better than ever!!

Blue marquees last seen on Centre Court 2007 ( It could be that the pavilion behind- last seen 2008!)

Volleyball week continues on Weymouth Beach tonight with Vince Joyce coming down to a coach local players. Unfortunately if you are not already signed up ( i.e spoken to Graeme) we are now full for this event.

Last night saw the penultimate Tuesday evening league matches. For the first time this season Rob Semmance and Dom Cosserat defeated Terry Oldrid and David Markwick to take the weekly crown.

A SERIES WINNERS: Rob Semmance and Dom Cosserrat beat David Markwick and Terry Oldrid 15-13

B SERIES WINNERS:Nick Tims and Arran Smith beat Ashley Smith and Adam James 15 -13

C SERIES WINNERS : Mat Plamer and Robin Brown won

MONDAY 21ST JULY

Classic week began this week with glorious sunshine keeping the punters on the beach happy all day. Mean while the orgainisers were working out where all the courts could go considering their is now huge Castle made of sand on courts 9-11 . After a lot of measuring and consultations all now seems to be resolved and the Castle will certainly be a talking point over the weekend.

If teams who have pre qualified are thinking of coming down on Friday evening ( from finish of qualifying event) to get a training game in please contact the organisers so that courts can be booked and matches can be co-ordinated.

Saturday nights party is now confirmed to be taking place again at the marquees on the beach to start and then moving on to Banus

For local visitors to the site you may want to listen to Wessex FM tomorrow at 12.10pm there maybe a voice you recognise!!

Finally, also for locals, tomorrow nights evening league may have trouble starting on time due to the numbers of people on the beach and the amount of space available to put up courts, so come prepared for a slight delay.

SUNDAY 20TH JULY

It was announced today that after their great success on the World Tour in Marseille Shauna Mullin and Denise Johns will be coming to Weymouth after all. It was orginallly thought that they wqould be playing in an event in Bulgaria but the pairs plans have now changed so that they can come to weymouth .

In Marseilles Shauna and Denise nearly had afantastic result narrowly losing to the German pair Pohl and Rau 20-22 21-19, 15-8. Pohl and Rau then went onto win the event!

It looks like Shauna and Denise will keep their partnership going while Lucy Boulton and Zara Dampney will team up. It will certainly add a new dimension to the womens event!

THURSDAY JULY 10TH

Entries into the mens and womens draws came with a rush this week. The mens event is shaping up to be a Classic with at least 9 teams highly capable of winning.

Two teams from the GB squad will be here Jody Gooding and Robin Miedzybodzki, both fomer winners, and Steve Grotowski and Jake Sheaf.

Playing on Weymouth Beach for the first time will be Spanish beach Tour players Sergio Nunez and Abel Bernal.

From Switzerland Bernie Vesti teams up with Australian Aaron Stolberg for the first time.

Last year's runners up Steve Fee and Albrecht Glitz are back to see if they can go one better.

Great Britain coaches and Sandbanks champions Morph Bowes and Matt Grinlaubs will be capable of beating anyone if last weekend's form is anything to go by.

Finally VEBT tour leaders Matt Pearce and Tom Lord cant be discounted and neither can last years semi finalists South Africans Richard Payne and Brett Goslett.

It should all make spectacular entertainment on weymouth Beach from 25-27th July.

Confirmation of entry to the mian draw will be announced shortly.

WEDNESDAY JULY 9TH

This is just a quick update. The site will be fully updated with all Classic entries and Tuesday league results on Thursday evening.

For the Classic entry there are now just 2 mens spaces open and 5 womens spaces. If you want one of these follow the links on our entry page. It is now first come first served!!! We hope to have sorted out which teams go straight to Saturday main draw by the weekend.

TUESDAY JULY 8TH

As expected there was a last minute rush for entries last night as the deadline approached! At the moment it would appear that we have 43 mens teams and 26 women. This is slightly more than what appears on the EVA website (below) because we know of a few teams who had contacted us after signing up problems

This does mean that if your team is on the list below( and the other teams we know of ) you can be certain of at least being in the qualification tournaments starting at 2pm on Friday. The decision about automatic qualification places for saturday will be made in the next few days.

This means that there are a few slots left for teams who want to sign up late. In fact there are spaces for 5 mens teams and 6 women. You will have to pay a £5 late fee on top of the entry fee and it will be first come first served.

This list is direct from the Volleyball england site at 8.30am:

THURSDAY 3RD JULY

It was announced today that in recognition of the support given to the event by the RAF that the event will this year

be known as ' THE RAF Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic '

It is only a rumour that the Red Arrows will be putting in an appearance!!!!

WEDNESDAY 2ND JULY

SKY TV ARE BACK !!

It has been confirmed by the event organisers that, thanks to the great support from the RAF, Sky will be back on Weymouth Beach this summer to film the semi final and finals of the mens and womens Classic from july 25-27th.

The production by SGTV was a great success last year and received very positive feedback when it was shown on Sky Sports in October.

The coverage should be an even greater incentive for teams to reach the final stages at Weymouth this year!

REPORT FOR DORSET EVENING ECHO

Britain's number 1 womens beach volleyball player and Weymouth Beach Classic title holder Lucy Boulton made a surprise trip to weymouth on Tuesday night to play in the Weymouth Beach Volleyball league.

Lucy taking, a break from her travels on the World tour, played with local player and boyfriend Tristan Sheppard. It was an interesting experience for the local teams playing against such a strong player but Lucy and Tristan did not have it all their own way. This week's echo report:

The beach volleyball season really came alive this week on Weymouth beach with, for the first time this season all the top local players competing.

In the first semi final Terry Oldrid teaming up for the first time with his new regular partner, David Markwick just managed to edge out Russell Laming and James Tagart 15 -13.

The second semi final was equally tight with Rob Semmance and Dom Cosserat defeating Ryan and Jules Stout 16-14.

This set up what should have been a very tight final but Semmance and Cosserat's superior beach fitness seemed to pull them through to a 15-11 win. This takes Rob Semmance to the top of the overall ranking table for the first time.

The b series was equally hard fought but eventually local footballer Andy Mason, showed his multi sport talents with his patner Tony Walker to defeat Budmouth's Jake Hetherington and Ren Lawson in the final.

the C Series was won by Mat Board and Laura Stone.

TUESDAY 3RD JUNE

THURSDAY 29TH MAY

Just a couple of photos from Tuesday evening, a few more on the local league page with the updated rankings

The last one is a bit scenic but shows what the sky was like by the time the last players left the beach

REPORT FOR ECHO

Rob semmance and Dom Cosserat scored their first tournament win of the season this week in the Tuesday evening beach volleyball league when they defeated Terry Oldrid and new partner Elliott Sawyer in the final 15-10.

With 14 year old Ryan Stout reaching his first final last week it was encouraging for local volleyball that this week it was 19 year old Elliott's first final. However an ankle injury to Elliott in the final meant it was difficult for him and Terry to be at thier best and they came up against Rob and Dom playing at good quality beach volleyball. With Terry reaching his second consecutive final it means he keeps his lead at the top of the ranking table.

The B Series was won by Veronica Sirova and Roger Barnett from Yeovil who beat Mat Penn and John Marston in the final 15-11.

The C series was an all royal manor arts College battle between Alistair Mitchell and Grant Bond playing against Stephen Williamson and Hayden Francis. In a tight match Alistair and Grant won a tight final 15-13.

SUNDAY 25TH MAY 2008

Champion Oldrid reigns supreme

By Adam Summers report from Saturday's Dorset Evening Echo

RECORD-BREAKER: Youngest finalist Ryan Stout
RECORD-BREAKER: Youngest finalist Ryan Stout

REIGNING King of the Sands' Terry Oldrid got his Weymouth Beach Volleyball season off to a flying start by winning the first A Series event of the campaign alongside partner Russ Laming.

The duo defeated Ryan and Jules Stout in the final 15-11 but it was also a momentous occasion for the runners-up as well.

Not only was it the first time that the Stouts had reached the final but for Ryan it also heralded a new league record as he became the youngest ever player to reach the showpiece at the age of just 14.

The under-15 national beach champion continues to make rapid progress in the game and is now clearly capable of upsetting opponents of much greater experience.

Josh Ellis and Craig Bishop won the B final. Ellis is more recognised for his boxing exploits while Bishop is a member of Weyport's national water polo side. They defeated Chris Cannon and Clive Budden 15-13.

For the first time ever there was also a C Division competition, which was won by Mark Salmon and Koomba Mogosti who overcame Andy Carlile and Rich Samuel in the final

Overall 70 players took part in the evening's activities and the teams are expected back on the beach on Tuesday. New players are always welcome and can meet up with the rest of the competitors at the Pavilion end of Weymouth Beach at 6pm.

LOCAL VOLLEYBALL

The Beach Volleyball season began in Weymouth last night when a record 66 players turned up for the evening league's warm up night. It was great to welcome back a combination of old and new faces. The unofficial winners in the A series were Rob Semmance and Dom Cosserrat who beat old favourites David Markwick and Russell Laming. The B series had a record 16 teams competing and was won by Damien and Matt. Dont forget it was warm up week so no points were scored towards the King of The Beach.

If we get the same numbers next week we may look at splitting into 3 divisons of 2 a side A, B and C

Final key point : After a meeting with the Council today they assure us that before the weekend they will have made their first attempt at levelling the Beach from the hills and mountains of last night!
